Kanoe the Kazoo Floats for August and September

BATTLE CREEK MI, August 2, 2006 – Come and be a part of the Kalamazoo River as Binder Park Zoo and other area conservation organizations seek water enthusiasts to join them on an excursion down the Kalamazoo River, one of its tributaries, or a lake in the watershed.  This annual expedition offers families guided tours that are sure to capture the beauty and natural history of the Kalamazoo River or one of its tributaries or lakes.

The Kalamazoo River offers a variety of habitats where thousands of species depend on the river for survival.  Since its inception in 2003, Kanoe the Kazoo float trips have introduced over one thousand citizens and key decision makers to the beauty, recreational opportunities, and economic impact of the Kalamazoo River.

The Calhoun Conservation District will host a float down the Rice Creek, a tributary of the Kalamazoo, on August 12.  The Rice Creek is a designated trout stream and is quite wild.

On August 18th, Calhoun County Parks will lead a float on Calhoun County’s Graham Lake, discussing lake biology and human impacts on lakes.

On August 26th, The Kalamazoo River Watershed Council will lead a float on the Kalamazoo River from Augusta to Galesburg.  This is another wild and wide stretch of river that is easy enough for beginners.

On September 13th The Kalamazoo Nature Center will host the last opportunity to float down the Kalamazoo River for this year’s Kanoe the Kazoo from downtown Kalamazoo to D Avenue near Plainwell.

Registration is required.  Information, times, and details on all trips is available by calling Tom Funke at 269-979-1351 x203 tfunke@binderparkzoo.org.  Cost for each event varies, as does the length of each trip.  Rentals are available for all floats.

The Kanoe the Kazoo is brought to the residents of the Kalamazoo Watershed and surrounding communities by the Lake Allegan/Kalamazoo River Watershed Phosphorus, Total Maximum Daily Load Implementation Committee, and thirty other organizations.
